Work For It (Original Poem)

Hey folks!

To be completely honest, I've been struggling with this whole "long-distance relationship" thing recently, and so has my boyfriend. We've been separated for college since August, with a few intermittent visits with each other along the way. It sucks, dude. Now, as opposed to a lot of strong beliefs, we have never once thought of breaking up, because ummmmmmm that would suck even worse. No! We love each other and there's not much that can change that. My point is, though, that a lot of people have asked and keep asking how we are, and I can tell they're likely expecting me to say we broke up because it was too hard. I don't like that. I will say-- IT'S SUPER HARD. It's terrible not being able to see and hang out with my best friend! I totally get where these people are coming from, but I don't appreciate their doubt. Too many people believe long-distance relationships don't work because they're too hard. This poem that I've written..... I wrote it to prove that belief wrong. The only things you need for a long-distance relationship to work are love, loyalty, and perseverance to keep up the relationship just like you would if you two were together. My boyfriend and I text and call each other just as much as before, if not more because we miss each other, and we're just fine in our relationship. If anyone would like to ask more questions and discuss more on this with my experience, just let me know, but for now, here's the poem. Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoy!

Love,

Noelle

Work For It

They say long-distance relationships can’t work.

I disagree.

I think long-distance relationships can work.

But that doesn’t mean they don’t suck.

If you find someone you care about enough

To actually want to pursue the relationship,

It’s possible to work through distance,

Because it’s better to hurt over distance

Than to hurt over heartbreak.

If you really love someone,

Letting go of them simply

Because of miles between you,

Simply seems unreasonable.

Why would you let them go if they mean that much to you?

I get it, it’s hard.

I really, really understand,

But it’s so good at the same time.

It lets you know how much you’re cared about

And it lets you know what you deserve.

If they’re willing to give what you deserve,

And you’re willing to give what they deserve,

Then it’s all worth it.

You come out either better or worse

On the other side.

You either grow together,

Or you grow apart.

And it doesn’t matter

How technically far apart you are,

Being physically apart is so different

Than being emotionally apart.

I feel like I have grown emotionally

Much more since he’s been away.

We’re forced to communicate

And express what we’re feeling

And we’ve both learned how to do that better.

Being in a long-distance relationship

Means taking time out of your day

To dedicate to one person

With no interruptions

Because you treasure that time more

If you don’t get it as often.

You have different schedules,

Different patterns,

Different lives

So when you do have time,

You take the time show each other love

If the relationship is worth it,

It’ll stay together.

The only thing determining its destiny

Is your will to keep it

Or else it will be destroyed.

The only thing stopping you from succeeding in a long-distance relationship

Is your inability to work for it.

Distance means nothing for those you care about.
