Hi, guys!
I've been loving to listen to Christmas music recently, because, honestly, I can't wait for it-- I'm so excited. People have been trashing on me for it recently, though, and I don't understand why. So, to respond with my point of view on the situation, this poem just came to mind and I wrote it out... honestly it's better than I expected! It's definitely more of a slam poem, so I also recorded me performing it so you can understand it further than just the written word. Here's both versions. Hope you enjoy!
Love, Noelle :)
Let Me Be Merry
People complain ‘bout my Christmas cheer
They say it belongs at the end of the year
They say I play music just way too soon
Started blasting it all over way back in June
They say “It’s not winter yet; let’s enjoy fall.
I’m getting my costume, ready for Hall—
—oween.” Anxious for their time to be spooky, scary
Personally, I’d rather sing and be merry.
What good does it do to focus on the negative?
To trash someone’s fun just ‘cause you’re competitive
Look, here’s what I have to say:
I’ll take Christmas over anything else, every day,
But I don’t care what you prefer to celebrate.
You have your fun with your costumes and candy.
I’ll stick with my family time, ‘cause that’s what God gives me.
A day that brings us together—
No matter work schedules, no matter the weather,
That’s where Christmas brings joy to this little Heather.
We spend so long apart during the year,
Of course my smile will be ear to ear
When I see my siblings walk through that door,
With their presence, their presents, and luggage galore.
I run up to them and hug them so tight—
I can’t wait to watch movies all through the night,
With my sister asleep in the first thirty minutes—
My brother and I talking ‘bout shows like we wrote it
We wake to the smell of sugary goodness that is
With our coffee, bacon, eggs to add to this.
I’m filled with such happiness running downstairs—
The cliché is true: Christmas is in the air.
My days from then on are of laughter and love,
Given to us from our Father above.
I’m so thankful for this time of year,
To celebrate Jesus’ birth with no fear
Of being attacked for singing too soon—
Being merry too soon
Having fun too soon
Loving others too soon
If you wanna care about something else more, go right ahead,
But don’t judge me for what I love simply because it’s not what you’ve been—
Trained to think of.
Who said Christmas cheer had to be chronologically correct?
I say we move along and eject—
That idea because it does much more than complain.
It dampens the happy person’s view of the day.
If that makes them happy, why would you shut them down?
Don’t they too deserve love from the crowd?
Sure, they’re different, everyone is,
But how would you feel if you were treated like this?
Just for liking something, enjoying yourself—
They trash you and bash you and say, “Kill yourself.”
When did society become so bitter?
I aim to get rid of the litter’s—
Idea that joy can come only once a year.
Joy is supposed to be something you share—
Something you give as gifts all year round
Something to be shot from cannons to the crowd
Everyone deserves to feel this joy
Feel this happiness, feel this love—
Not because we’ve earned it,
But because we’ve received grace from above
This grace is so special,
God loves us so much,
So why should we celebrate only one of twelve months?
God’s love never ceases,
His Christmas cheer never pauses
He sent His son down to save us, and that’s what the cause is
For my love of Christmas
I love it, I do
I love to celebrate, just like the Who’s.
So don’t be a Grinch—let me be merry.
You may not think like me but that’s just the cherry—
On top of a much bigger problem
The world’s full of hate, but I’m not gonna call ‘em—
On an issue that great
Not yet.
Let’s focus on this for now, that’s what you’ll get from me.
Love to talk more, but you’ll say, “Let me be.”
I’ll just talk on Christmas, that’s what I’ll send
Let’s all just be happy, with joy to no end.
Love what you love and I’ll do the same,
But my God is my God, and I’ll love Him every day.
Christmas is so much more than music,
More than family, than presents, than food.
Christmas is all about sharing the good news.
So why would you NOT celebrate all year?
